THE LATEST UPDATE

Thanks to all of your efforts over the years, we are now closer than we’ve ever been!   In the next 10 days, the fate of regional transit will be determined, and either we will be moving our region forward, or we won’t.  It will take EVERY VOICE in this Coalition to bring it home!

The legislative session ends on April 22nd and there are still a number of steps to reach the finish line and pass the RTA bill, AB-282.   The final critical steps are votes by the state Assembly and Senate.  Click here to see more about this bill.   Also, thanks to those who turned out this past week at the Coalition meeting and the West Side Listening Session.  Your efforts and support are why we have come so far, so keep up the good work!

But to get there, ALL legislators need to hear from their constituents they want regional transit solutions and that inaction on the RTA bill is not acceptable.  At this point, every single call, every single contact makes a difference!   Here’s how you can help:

Step 1:  Contact Your Senator and Representative today!

  • CALL and let them know that the RTA is a top priority for you, as a constituent.  Follow-up with a letter or email.  When you call, be sure to leave your full name, address and phone number so they know you are a constituent! If you’ve called in the past call again.
  • If your legislators are Representatives Cullen, Staskunas and Honadel or Senators Sullivan and Lehman, it is VERY important you call them.  They need to know there is support for this bill from their constituents.
  • If you are a business or organization, please send a letter on your stationery attached to an email.
  • Urge them to work with their colleagues to move AB 282 forward this legislative session and ask them what they are doing to support our local bus systems.

Don’t know who your legislators are?  Call 1-800-362-9472 or visit “Who Represents Me?” to search by address.

Step 2:  Contact Legislative Leaders

  • Urge them to schedule the RTA bill for a vote (they are deciding now!).  Tell them that letting the RTA bill stall in this session is not acceptable.
  • Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker: 877-496-0472, Sen.Decker@legis.wisconsin.gov
  • Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan: 888-947-0044, Rep.Sheridan@legis.wisconsin.gov

Step 3:  Spread the word!  Please share this information with your members and networks and ask for their help in reaching this historic milestone.  We can’t afford the cost of inaction on the RTA bill, AB-282.

Our future is at stake:

  1. Without the RTA, we will lose of up to 1/3 of our transit service and cut people off from employment, school, shopping, and opportunity.
  2. Without the RTA our ability to advance regional transit and connect people to over a million jobs, create thousands of new jobs, attract businesses and investors, and millions of dollars in economic growth will be lost.
  3. These are real costs to real people and businesses.  Leadership is needed NOW by our legislators.
